Progress on Kings
The transformation at 401 Kings Highway is happening! In the last update, homeowners Karen and Guy Buttaro were awaiting another meeting of the Historic Lewes Architectural Review Commission for final approval of their renovation plans.
Fortunately, this time, the plans were approved as presented! You may recall, the property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its contribution to our town. It is a unique example of Italianate architecture in the Picturesque Movement style.
So, what’s happening now? Exciting updates include some historic discoveries and painstaking extra care:
An addition was approved to mirror the existing turn-of-the century addition (now on the left) on the right side
Restoration of the wraparound porch was approved. In the architectural ‘excavation’ above the porch, they uncovered an original yellow ceiling
All windows have been/will be restored. They will use all of them and add some additional windows in the back of the house; all windows facing Kings Highway will be original
Floors throughout the house will be original and where new floor needs to be added, the Buttaros will use wood from the attic (floor boards and beams) to be milled into floors
Work continues on the HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, too.
Stay tuned for even more progress throughout the Spring!
