The second post in a series of updates on the transformation of a Lewes treasure at 401 Kings Highway

Fit For Kings: Part II

The Buttaros continue to make progress - here’s the latest update!

We were thrilled to find out that so many Lewes locals,like all of us at The Lee Ann Wilkinson Group, are interested in following along on the transformation on Kings Highway.

Karen and Guy Buttaro recently purchased this property at 401 Kings Highway, which was built in 1871, eventually became a doctor’s office, and then over time, needed significant renovation. 

 

The Buttaros have taken on the challenge and have an amazing vision for this property’s next chapter.

 

Aside from significant clearing of the lot and pulling back ivy and vines, the first step toward the residence restoration has been to work with Brenda Jones Architectural Design. Together, they are discussing plans to take to the Historic Lewes Architectural Review Commission the first week in October. Once they have an approved roadmap, they will embark on even more of the actual renovation.

 

Among the initial restoration steps are:

·         Removing radiators to updates with modern HVAC

·         Taking down windows and shutters to strip and restore

·         Keeping the original staircase and windows

·         Restoring the windows and mouldings

·         Replacing chandeliers

·         Refinishing the floors: the current floors were possibly redone in the 1930’s or 1940’s and may be pine underneath…time will tell!

Included in their renovation ideas:

  • Expanding kitchen and creating a butler’s pantry, keeping many of the original architectural points of interest

  • Making the upstairs more symmetrical and ending with 4 bedrooms, keeping the landing, transom windows, and original stairs to the attic

  • Renovating the front porch to make the Kings Highway entrance the main entrance (there are two main entrances, and when it was a doctor’s office, patients would wait on the side porch for their appointments)

This fascinating property includes so many architectural details, which the Buttaros are keen to keep, including the ornate moulding, detailed window frames, glass switchplates, and so many other wood accents.
